Who is Roo?
Playful, curious, full of imagination and always exploring, Roo is a representation of the spirit of childhood and reflects our belief that a child’s environment should enrich their development.
Roo inspires us to find pieces that spark creativity through play, is uncompromising to our health and our planet, and is durable enough to withstand years of rigorous play with ease of cleaning and care.
Things We Care About
Every rug collection goes through a rigourous verification process before we list them in our store. Here are just a few things we look for.
Integrity & Transparency
While everyone knows that a certified organic rug is the healthiest choice in the market, not everyone has the budget for one. That is why we believe transparency is key.
We work with non-toxic experts to determine whether or not a material or ingredient is safe for our health and our environment. From there, we strive to be transparent with the materials used in each rug down to its fibres and dyes so that you can make an informed decision.
At Rugs by Roo, it is not about getting it perfect. Non-toxic living is a journey and we are here to support you in that.
Ethical Manufacturing
This is why Rugs by Roo got started. To bring awareness to the child labour issue in the carpet & rug industry. We only work with suppliers whose processes have been vetted by a third party organization such as Goodweave International.
Some of our suppliers have built schools and medical centres in India and other areas where our rugs are made. Their projects extend beyond basic care to include programs that target child labour prevention and empowerment of women.
The rug weaving labour force is predominately women and a great number of our rug manufacturers have established programs that help equip women with the necessary skills to earn a living and support their families.
No PFAS, Formaldehyde or Phthalates
PFAS: Also known as "forever chemicals" and commonly used in stain-resistant and water-repellent treatments, PFAS doesn't break down easily, accummulating in our homes, bodies and waterways. PFAS have been linked to hormone disruption and immune system issues.
Formaldehyde: Used in certain rug finishes and glues, formaldehyde is a well-documented respiratory irritant and has been classified as a potential carcinogen.
Phthalates: Often found in synthetic backings and adhesives, phthalates are known to interfere with endocrine function and have been associated with developmental concerns in children.
No Microplastics
Microplastics are an invisible threat, shedding from synthetic rugs and accumulating in our homes, waterways, and even our bodies. These tiny particles contribute to environmental pollution and raise serious health concerns, lingering in ecosystems long after they’re released.
You won't find synthetic rugs in our store. We simply don't carry them. We carry natural, biodegradable materials—a cleaner home, a healthier planet, and no hidden plastics underfoot.
Durability (Kid-Proof)
We are parents too and have our own version of Roo at home. We want Roo to enjoy their rugs without worrying about ruining them. That is why durability and ease of care is important to us.
At Rugs by Roo, we carry rugs made from high quality materials such as wool or cotton that can withdstand abuse and messes. Our large collection of Washable rugs speaks to how much we value convenience and health.
Fun fact - our washable cotton rug collection comes out looking new with every wash. You can't say the same with synthetic rugs.

Meet the Co-Founders

Sandy Wong
I remember watching the documentary Price of Free with my 4 year old and the kids in the film were the same age as her. I was shocked, saddened and frustrated. I decided in that moment that abolishing child labor in the carpet & rug industry would be my contribution on earth. This is what keeps me up at night, what gets me up in the mornings.
Kindness and love is our guiding principles in my household and I remind my kids what goes on in other parts of the world that are often unseen and forgotten.
Bippan Dhillon
My love for nature runs deep, whether I'm lost in the forest or finding peace through kundalini dance. After being diagnosed with Celiac in 2006, I ditched gluten and embraced a life of health and wellness, syncing myself with nature’s rhythms. Raised by my strong Indian mother, who instilled in me values of sustainability and quality textiles, I seek harmony in a chaotic world by trusting my intuition and making simple, earth-friendly choices.
With a big, lively family I wouldn’t trade for anything, my life is a perfectly imperfect adventure.
