Have you ever picked up your child's artwork and you felt it was so good that you framed and hung it on the wall? Now, you can take it a step further and turn it into a custom area rug for your child's bedroom.
Phyllis Ripple was going through boxes of her children's artwork when she came up with the concept for 4 FAVORITES. As she went through the box of treasures that belonged to her son and daughters' childhood, it brought her joy and a sense of pride. Some of the drawings were framed and hung on walls; others were just in boxes that gathered dust. Those keepsakes had travelled the world with the Ripple family as they lived throughout Pakistan, Indonesia, the United States, Egypt and the United Kingdom.
Phyllis decided to breathe new life into these favorite relics by translating them into her other favorite love - carpets. With this concept, 4 FAVORITES was born. Combining her skills, knowledge and network harnessed from her existing rug company, ecoFiber Custom Rugs, 4 FAVORITES was started with similar qualities and visions. All 4 FAVORITES rugs are Goodweave Certified, meaning that each rug is made with no child, forced or bonded labour. Each rug is made from 100% New Zealand Wool, with AZO-free dyes and is hand tufted by experienced adult weavers.
A quality area rug often becomes a family heirloom that gets passed on from generation to generation because of its beauty, unique design and one-of-a-kind craftsmanship. Now, your child's artwork can be the spark of inspiration behind that family heirloom. 4 FAVORITES Design-Your-Own Wool Area Rugs make a great family keepsake item for many years to come.
4 FAVORITES translates your child’s artwork into a high quality woven wool rug that will be made once, and only for you. Your original rug is handmade in India and all rugs are certified child-labor free.
Phyllis Ripple founded 4 FAVORITES as a way of preserving her own children’s artwork. "I realized I could immortalize my children's original drawings by creating fine hand made wool rugs which will last for years and years".
No stranger to the rug business Phyllis is also the founder and CEO of ecoFiber Custom Rugs. Based in Boulder, Colorado, ecoFiber Custom Rugs manufactures handmade rugs in Nepal for the architectural and interior design communities in the United States and abroad. With both companies Phyllis has blended her passion for design and textiles, her university education in art history, and her social and environmental concerns to create a business model that supports sustainable principles. And in both cases she put her money behind preventing the exploitation of children.
Phyllis routinely traverses the world seeking inspiration and learning from dyers and weavers, her partners in the creative process. Whether it is a 4 FAVORITES creation or an ecoFiber rug her dedication to sustainability is unwavering. The natural fibers, dyes and the craftsmanship of her weavers result in rugs, which are not only an ethical choice, but also ones that are truly a works of art.
The New Zealand sheep farm industry is held to extremely high standards when it comes to sheep husbandry. Internationally banned pesticides are prohibited from being used on New Zealand sheep farms. Voluntary certifications such as the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) are in place to ensure that sheep are treated responsibly and that their surrounding land are protected and respected. Often raised on high altitudes in harsh climates, New Zealand sheep farms cause very little impact to the natural landscape and do not compete with food production.
When it comes to New Zealand sheep wool, it is regarded as the purest and whitest wool in the world. This is an important characteristic when it comes to rug making, especially for rug designs that entail lighter shades of colour. New Zealand wool offers excellent dyeing characteristics that create long-lasting colours. Amongst the many benefits of wool rugs, it is a natural material that is hygienic, non allergenic, has no harmful gasses and deters the growth of bacteria and dust mites. Wool is also flame resistant thanks to its thick insulating char layer and is a great choice for asthma sufferers because of its natural filtering ability. The natural strength and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic allows a wool rug to last for decades.
