The Foundation of a Healthy Home
Your floors are where life unfolds — where your kids play, your pets nap, and you gather to rest and connect. But did you know that more than 80% of carpets and rugs today are made with synthetic fibers, dyes, and chemicals that pollute the air your family breathes?
That’s why Rugs by Roo has expanded beyond off-the-shelf area rugs to offer custom carpet solutions made from the purest natural fibers. We’ve done the research, vetted the partners, and built the tools to make it easy — so you can create a home that’s not only beautiful, but also safe, nurturing, and aligned with your values.
Step-by-Step Guide
Every home is different. Here’s how to choose the best fit for your space.
Step 1: Choose wall-to-wall or custom area rug
- Seamless coverage, cozy underfoot everywhere
- Great for bedrooms, basements, and family living spaces
- Adds insulation and soundproofing
- Requires professional installation
- Defines a space within a room
- Flexible — easy to move, replace, or layer
- Perfect for living rooms, dining rooms, nurseries, or offices
- Custom sizes & bound edges for a polished look
Step 2: Measure your space
How you measure depends on which you chose in Step 1. Here's each.
If you chose wall-to-wall carpet
Carpet is ordered by the roll, and rolls come in a 12-foot width. That one fact drives the math:
- Measure your room's length and width.
- If the room is wider than 12 feet, a single roll won't span it — you'll need to double the length to cover the extra width. Budget for this early, because it changes the quantity significantly.
- For anything beyond a simple rectangle — closets, alcoves, L-shapes, and especially stairs — find a local installer to measure your space. They'll account for cutouts, seams, and stair wrapping that are hard to estimate on your own.
- Have your installer sign off on the final quantity in writing before you order.
Why the sign-off matters: our carpet is 100% undyed wool. If you order short and have to reorder, the new batch may come from a different production run, and the color can vary slightly. On a staircase especially, a mismatched seam is visible. Getting the quantity right the first time matters.
Tools that help: a tape measure (or laser measure), paper and pencil, and a calculator. For a preliminary quote your numbers don't need to be perfect — your installer confirms the exact quantity before you order.
If you chose a custom area rug
Sizing is driven by your furniture, not the room's full dimensions. The rug sets the stage for the space — and furniture sitting on top of it makes a room look larger, while a rug that's too small makes everything look like it's floating.
- Living room: at minimum, the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on the rug. Ideal: all legs on.
- Dining room: measure your table and add about 24 inches on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
- Bedroom: the rug extends past the sides and the foot of the bed.
Measure the area you want covered at its widest points, then match it to the nearest standard or custom size. If you're unsure, order samples first (Step 4) — or book a free consult and we'll size it together.
Step 3: Choose your collection
Your options depend on what you chose in Step 1. Find the style that fits your life. Each collection offers a unique look and feel — from cozy, plush textures perfect for bedrooms to low-profile weaves designed for high-traffic spaces.
Wall-to-wall carpet: one material, by design.
Our custom carpet comes in 100% undyed wool. There's no menu here on purpose — undyed wool is durable, naturally stain-resistant, and ages beautifully, with no added dyes. Where you do have choices is in the look: compare pile heights, weaves, and natural color blends to find the right feel for your room.

Custom area rugs: choose your fiber.
For area rugs, you choose the material based on how hard the room gets used:
Cotton: Best for nurseries and casual, lower-traffic rooms. Keep in mind cotton is soft, easygoing, the most washable option and lighter duty.
Wool: Best for everyday, high-traffic rooms. Keep in mind wool is durable, soft, naturally stain-resistant, ages well.
Premium Wool: Best for the rooms you want to feel special. Keep in mind premium wool is our highest-grade wool, softest underfoot and built to last longest.
Not sure which fits your space and budget? That's exactly what samples (Step 4) and a free consult are for.
Step 4: Order samples
Experience the beauty of natural fibers in person. Screens can’t capture the warmth, texture, and true tones of undyed wool. That’s why we ship sample swatches straight to your door. Lay them on your floor, test them against your furniture, and see how the colors shift in different light. Feel the softness under your fingertips before you commit.
