The Difference You Made in 2021

Written by Anjali, Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation US

As 2021 draws to a close, I want to thank you for all you have done to support our work and to ensure that all children are free and have the opportunity to be educated and reach their full potential.  Together, we accomplished so much in 2021 for the world's most marginalized children.  I hope you read this end of year recap with pride, knowing that none of this would be possible without you.

This year saw the first ever reported increase in child labor globally, even before the pandemic struck in early 2020.  With this as our backdrop, our work has become even more critical.

COVID-19
Relief As in 2020, earlier this year we turned attention and resources to responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated lockdowns, which have had a devastating impact on the most vulnerable children and their families. Through these efforts, along with our sister organizations in India, we protected 9+ million people across 390 districts in 17 states in India.

100 Million campaign
Earlier this month we celebrated the 5th anniversary of the 100 Million campaign.  Launched by survivors, young people and Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi in India in December 2016, this movement has spread globally.  We support young people's mobilizations to end violence against children, eradicate child labor, and ensure education - breaking the cycles of illiteracy, poverty and violence for good.

Laureates and Leaders and Fair Share to End Child Labor
In 2021, we launched the Fair Share for Children Campaign to end child labor in countries worldwide by securing a fair share of resources, policies, and social protection for the most marginalized children and their communities.  Building on this, in September 2021, we hosted the Laureates and Leaders Fair Share to End Child Labour: Survivors and Leaders event, bringing survivors of child labor, youth activists, Nobel Laureates, world leaders together for a high-level event during the UN General Assembly week.  Alongside this event, a briefing note, A Fair Share to End Child Labour: Universal Social Protection for Children in Low-Income Countries, was released highlighting that just $53 billion a year would close the financing gap to provide universal child benefits to every child in low-income countries. This is the equivalent to just 2 days of the G7 countries' spending on COVID relief packages in 2020.

Creating Child Labor Free Mica
We continue to support the creation of Child Friendly Villages in India, particularly in the mica belt of Jharkhand and Bihar. Not only are these villages ending child labor, promoting education, empowering children and their communities, and working towards the holistic development of villages but also engaging the state and local government agencies.

Rajkumari was once a child laborer in mica. Today she is a community organizer and teaches in her village's school.  Listen to her words.

100,000 Rescues
And last but not least, this year we surpassed 100,000 children rescued from slavery by our colleagues on the ground in India. 100,000 children whose childhoods have been reclaimed, who have the chance to experience freedom and safety, and the opportunities they deserve to reach their full potential.

I know this work can seem overwhelming. But with your help, ending the scourge of child labor is possible.  We know what works and what needs to be done.  Our plans for 2022 are no less ambitious than what we accomplished in 2021.  Can we count on you again?

Show your support today by making an end-of-year gift

Wishing you the most joyful new year.  Here's to 2022!

With gratitude and in partnership,
Anjali
