The Most Durable Rug Materials: Which One is Right for You?

The Most Durable Rug Materials: Which One is Right for You?

I was nervous as a dog owner thinking that it will be a lot of work to maintain and care for the rugs. I remember my first time considering adding rugs to our home. Where would be the best area to put it? I was thinking about either the living room or my home office.

One thing that I soon realized is considering what material is also very important. Choosing the best rug materials for a home with pets (and kids) requires some research.

The Most Durable Rug Materials: Which One is Right for You?

1.  Wool

Wool rugs are most durable, long lasting and easy to care for. There is a wax coating in natural wool rugs called lanolin. This coating prevents liquid from penetrating into the rug. Thus, it can resist stains and spills.

Aside from not staining as easily, wool rugs are the best to be placed in areas that have a lot of foot traffic as it has very strong fibre. They are also comfortable to walk on. When you step on wool pile, it bounces back very easily. In comparison, a synthetic fibre would stay flat and not bounce back.

From the price point of view, wool rugs can be expensive and it is a great investment in your home as you won't need to replace it every few years.

2. Cotton

Cotton rugs are also a great material as cotton is a natural fiber that is soft, comfortable, and easy to clean. Cotton rugs are well known to be a sustainable and eco-friendly option.

Most rugs from cotton are also washable. Washable cotton rugs material make it easy to clean and maintain nowadays.

Cotton is also lightweight and therefore, easy to clean. Just give it a shake! This helps in maintaining the look for years to come.

3. Jute

Jute rugs are the third one in terms of durability. They are also eco-friendly and and tightly woven. This gives the illusion that it's tough and it is very good for high traffic areas. Jute rugs can be rough to touch and not as soft to walk on.

However, you cannot wash jute rugs. Jute is simply just "grass". When it gets wet, or when moisture seeps through, it is very difficult to dry and mold can start growing in it.

4. Bamboo Fibres

Bamboo fibre rugs are also popular nowadays for an eco-friendly and durable rugs in homes. The bamboo fibres are blended with wool to make wool rugs softer and feel more silky to touch. They are also easy to clean and maintain.

However, bamboo fibre rugs can be slippery and for this reason, may not be suitable for high traffic areas. Also, because of its softness and silkiness, it is not as durable as wool rugs.

Choosing bamboo rugs in a room can add a unique texture to your home. An example of bamboo fibre rug is Loloi Serena Grey Area Rug

In conclusion, wool rugs are still the most durable. They are great for high traffic areas and are made to last. The price of wool rugs also reflect this quality as it is on the higher side compared to cottons.

When it comes to our pets, we have a strong sense of responsibility to keep them safe, happy, and healthy, just like we do for children. However, corporations, even our government, do not see our pets the same way that we do.

Our pets are exposed to way more synthetic materials and chemicals than we are. The regulations for pet products are not as strict or enforced as much as they are for humans. It can even be difficult to trust the products that you are buying for your pets.
