Rugs have been known and made for centuries among tribal people. They were first made by shepherds who needed heavy clothing to protect themselves from wind and cold. As time went on, those heavy clothes were used as floor coverings.
From traditions such as the Chinese, Moroccans, and the Turkish. Different people around the world have each developed rug-making methods. Of all these methods, there is very little difference in how they were made.
Nowadays, they are made using both machine and hand. The best way to identify the quality of any rug is through the technique and materials used in weaving the carpet.
Here is a detailed description of making a cotton rug from unprocessed cotton.
There are several processes and steps required to convert raw cotton material into yarns.
This step involves submerging the processed and clean yarns into a dye bath. This process is made by blending natural and synthetic elements to get the desired color or shades of color.
During the dying process, heat is supplied to the dye solution to allow the fiber to absorb the dye effectively. This also helps in the swelling of the fiber to make it more receptive. The dyed yarn is then passed through a series of drying processes such as the sun and allowed to dry.
Once the yarn is dyed and dried, the next is to convert the dyed yarn into the finished product. There are three methods one can make a cotton area rug. The first method is knotting, the second is tufting, and the third method is hooking.
The columns of threads are arranged vertically down the loom on the frame. The weaver starts the process by weaving the yarn on the threads’ column arranged in the loom.
The weaver knits the yarn knot by knot. There are three types of knotting methods. The Turkish knot, the Tibetan knot, and the Persian knot.
Latex material is used to cover the main backing material. While the surface of the weave is then sheared to create a dense pile flat surface cotton rug.
The weaver moves the yarn back and forth through a cotton backing using a specialized tool. This is the cheapest and most affordable of all the methods used in making cotton area rugs.
A cotton rug is a piece for decorative purposes. And also a work of art that comes with a long history of craftsmanship and luxury.
