Rug Selection & Safety
Are all your rugs non-toxic?
Are all your rugs non-toxic?
We believe in full transparency, because not every family can (or wants to) invest in 100% organic rugs — and that’s okay.
At a minimum, every rug we carry is free from:
- PFAS (“forever chemicals”)
- Flame retardants
- Phthalates
- Synthetic fibers
Beyond that baseline, materials and dyes vary. Some rugs are made with low-VOC or commercial dyes, while others meet the highest standard of GOTS-certified organic dyes and fibers.
To make it simple, we’ve created our ROO Rating system:
- Good – safe basics, non-toxic where it counts most
- Better – additional low-VOC practices, sustainable materials
- Best – fully organic, certified, healthiest option available
This way, you can confidently evaluate each rug according to your budget and comfort level, while always knowing what’s under your feet.
Are all your rugs organic?
Are all your rugs organic?
Not yet — though we’re moving the industry forward.
Currently, Tuft Love (our own brand) is the world’s first machine-washable GOTS-certified organic cotton rug collection. This is the highest textile standard available, guaranteeing purity from farm to finished rug.
Beyond Tuft Love, about 90% of our assortment is made from natural fibers like cotton, wool, and jute. These rugs aren’t always certified organic, but they’re still a major step up from synthetic rugs that may contain plastics, PFAS, or harmful chemical treatments.
Our goal is to keep expanding organic options while maintaining accessibility — so you can create a healthier home at the pace and budget that works for you.
I have a crawling baby at home. What type of rug do you recommend?
I have a crawling baby at home. What type of rug do you recommend?
If your child is under 3, we recommend:
- Tuft Love organic cotton rugs – the purest and safest option, plus machine washable for everyday messes.
- Lorena Canals – made from all-natural materials and dyes, no chemical sprays.
While Wool is also a great material, we do not typically recommend wool for children under 3 due to the shedding nature of wool. Wool rugs typically shed for the first 2-4 weeks of use.
Are your rugs safe for a nursery?
Are your rugs safe for a nursery?
For nurseries, Tuft Love is our top recommendation. These rugs are GOTS-certified organic cotton, making them the safest and healthiest option for your baby.
If you’re looking for natural alternatives at a lower price point, Lorena Canals and Oh Happy Home! rugs are also excellent — crafted with all-natural fibers and dyes, and free from harmful chemical sprays.
Do your rugs shed?
Do your rugs shed?
All handwoven and hand-tufted rugs shed during the first few months. Shedding comes from the final clipping of the pile. Wool rugs shed more than cotton; shaggier piles appear to shed more than low piles.
To reduce shedding:
- Vacuum gently on the lowest suction setting, with the beater bar off.
- For washable rugs, consider giving your rug its first wash to remove excess fibers.
If you prefer minimal shedding, we recommend flatweave or hand-knotted rugs.
Do I need a rug pad?
Do I need a rug pad?
Yes, for most rugs — it prevents slipping and adds cushioning.
Exceptions: outdoor rugs, bath mats, and kids’ play rugs.

Cotton vs. wool rugs — which should I choose?
Cotton vs. wool rugs — which should I choose?
It depends on your space and needs:
- Cotton: Ultra-soft, great for babies/toddlers, but fibers compress under heavy foot traffic. Washable cotton rugs (like Tuft Love) can be refreshed easily.
- Wool: Naturally durable and resilient, ideal for high-traffic spaces. Can feel a little “scratchy” and sheds initially.

What does GOTS Certified mean?
What does GOTS Certified mean?
GOTS = Global Organic Textile Standard. It’s the gold standard in textile safety:
- No harmful chemicals in manufacturing
- Full traceability from farm to finished product
- Guaranteed pesticide- and insecticide-free fields
Tuft Love is our GOTS-certified organic cotton rug collection.
Are recycled plastic rugs good for inside my home?
Are recycled plastic rugs good for inside my home?
We don’t recommend plastic rugs indoors. Synthetic fibers can shed microplastics into the air and affect indoor air quality — especially concerning if you have kids or pets spending lots of time on the floor.
This is actually the reason why you won't find any plastic rugs in our store.
How do I know if a rug is machine washable?
How do I know if a rug is machine washable?
Every product page lists Care Instructions, including whether a rug is machine washable.
The widest selection of washable rugs comes from Tuft Love, Lorena Canals, and Oh Happy Home!.
Rug Care
How do I clean my rug?
How do I clean my rug?
Every rug comes with specific care instructions — on the product page and on the label on the back of the rug.
- Tuft Love rugs (our organic line): Fully machine-washable. Wash cold, gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low heat. No detergent or dryer sheets — if needed, use a small amount of white vinegar or a gentle natural detergent.
- Other washable cotton or wool rugs (e.g., Lorena Canals, Oh Happy Home!): Same as above.
- Non-washable wool rugs: Spot clean only.
When in doubt, reach out to support@rugsbyroo.com and our care team will guide you.
My rug is shedding a lot — is this normal?
My rug is shedding a lot — is this normal?
Yes. All handmade tufted rugs shed during the first 2–4 months. This is due to the final clipping of the pile.
- Wool rugs: Shed more initially, especially with shaggy piles.
- Cotton rugs: Shed far less.
- Tuft Love rugs: Because they’re machine-washable organic cotton, you can give them a first wash to release excess fibers and minimize shedding right away.
To reduce shedding:
- Vacuum gently on the lowest setting, with the beater bar/bristles off.
- For washable rugs, run an initial wash cycle before first use.
My pet had an accident on my rug — what do I do?
My pet had an accident on my rug — what do I do?
If it’s washable (Tuft Love, Lorena Canals, Oh Happy Home!): Roll it up and toss it in the washing machine following care instructions.
If it’s not washable:
- Dab (don’t rub) with a white towel to absorb as much as possible.
- Check the underside and dab any seep-through.
- Spray the area with white vinegar and let sit for 5–10 minutes.
- Sprinkle baking soda to absorb residual moisture and odor.
- Vacuum with bristles off.
My rug smells musty — what should I do?
My rug smells musty — what should I do?
This sometimes happens during humid/rainy seasons at the rug’s country of origin. Rugs are washed before shipment, and if they pack slightly damp, they can develop a musty smell.
Solution:
- For washable rugs (Tuft Love, Lorena Canals, Oh Happy Home!) → Simply wash with cold water and a splash of white vinegar. This removes the odor and re-fluffs the rug.
- For non-washable rugs → Air the rug out in a dry, sunny spot for a few hours.
Do I need a rug pad?
Do I need a rug pad?
For most rugs, yes — rug pads prevent slipping and add cushioning. It also helps maintain rug performance longer.
Exceptions: Outdoor rugs, bath mats, and kids’ play rugs.
